The everyday life at school

About life on
Fjordane Folk High School

Our folk high school is located between the rough sea at Stad and the mighty Jostedalsbreen glacier. Nordfjordeid is just right and just right. Big enough to offer what you need. Small enough that you can have it a little to yourself.

Here you will live and interact with 85 other fellow students, in an inclusive community. You will be with people who share your interests, but also meet people who have completely different interests than you. This will help enrich your everyday life and develop you as a person.

You get to use the year to stretch yourself a little further, try new things, and gather experiences that you will benefit from later in life. When you dare to take the plunge, everything is in place for you to experience both mastery and progress, both professionally and personally.

How do you live?

The living environment with us is something of its own. Here you will live in pavilions (small houses) with space for ten students.

The advantage of living in a pavilion compared to regular boarding schools is that you can more easily get the good feeling of a home. The people you live with become your own little family this school year.

Each pavilion has four double rooms and two single rooms, each equipped with everything you need: bed, wardrobe, desk with drawers, wall shelf and washbasin. Of course, this requires you to work together with those you share the pavilion with to keep it clean and tidy.

The pavilion has a shared shower and toilet, as well as a cozy living room with a small kitchen. The kitchenette has a refrigerator, hotplates and sink. If you want to cook in the pavilion, it is a good idea to bring pans, cutlery, plates and glasses.

One of the pavilions is adapted for wheelchair users.

Frequently asked questions

  • No, of course not. We are committed to spreading the joy of food and no one should feel excluded.

If you have celiac disease, are lactose intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian or something else, we always have an alternative for you, without you having to pay extra for it. Just let us know in advance, and our skilled chefs will arrange food that you can tolerate, and that also tastes really good.

  • Most people come here without knowing anyone. We spend a lot of time in the first few weeks getting to know each other, and we arrange get-to-know-you tours and lots of fun activities. It usually doesn't take long before you feel at home.

  • No, you don't need any prior knowledge. We meet you where you are and adapt the teaching to your level, regardless of your line. The only thing is that you must be motivated and want to do your best.

  • School starts on Saturday, August 22, 2026, and ends on May 15, 2027.

  • We have around 86 students divided into nine grades. This gives a good balance. Our school is big enough for you to meet many different people, but small enough for you to be seen and heard.

  • You can choose from over 20 different electives. Some are related to the lines, such as riding, climbing and circus, while others are about creative and social activities such as photography, yoga, band, massage or baking.

  • Here you will find everything from traditional food to street food. Our chefs love to cook food that tastes really good. You can therefore look forward to being served four nutritious and delicious meals a day – breakfast, lunch, dinner and evening meal, all included in the school fee.

Our kitchen has debio bronze certification. This means that at least 15% of the food served is organic. We also trade Fairtrade, to contribute to more sustainable agriculture and better lives for farmers and workers in poor countries such as Africa, Asia and Latin America.

  • The price includes all meals, lodging, and most group trips, as well as all costs related to teaching and activities. The amount is divided into eight equal monthly payments that you must pay each month from September to April. The price is valid for the entire school year.

  • After dinner there is always something going on, whether it is electives, movie nights, training, baking or just relaxing in the living room by the fireplace. Some evenings we have joint events, and apart from that you decide for yourself how much you want to participate in.

  • You will receive an invoice from the school. We try to make it simple and clear, and you can always contact us if you need help with payment or have questions about prices.

The invoice will be sent as an e-invoice in the online bank, on Vipps or on Digipost, depending on how you have set it up. If you do not have any of these, it will be sent by post.

  • You can apply by clicking “apply here”. From November 15th we will have ongoing admissions, so it is a good idea to apply early. This will increase your chances of getting a place on the course you want to take.

At Fjordane Folkehøgskule, the food is more than just food. It's a joy to eat, a good atmosphere and really great flavors.

Every day, our chefs bake fresh organic bread and buns, and they conjure up hearty meals that are often made from locally sourced ingredients. It's good for us, and good for the environment.

Next year, you can look forward to being served four nutritious and delicious meals daily – breakfast, lunch, dinner and evening meal, all included in the school fee.

If you have celiac disease, are lactose intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian or otherwise, we always have an alternative for you - at no extra cost. Just let us know in advance and our skilled chefs will arrange it.

Electives

Electives are a great opportunity to try something new and get to know students from other streams. You have over 20 electives to choose from, ranging from juggling to barista.

Electives are optional as the name suggests and you can choose as many as you want. The length of electives varies from 1-2 hours per week, and they may vary slightly from year to year.
