Climate-motivated folk high school
We care
On Fjordane Folk High School We care about the people, the environment and the society around us.
Every day we try to make good choices to contribute to a better future. That's why we call ourselves a climate-motivated folk high school. We actively work to reduce our climate footprint and create a sustainable community. We are of course a certified Miljøfyrtårn company.
Here you will learn how small actions can lead to big changes, and you will have the opportunity to help make a difference for others.
Short trips
Why travel far and leave a deep climate footprint when we live in the middle of the most beautiful nature in the world? With fjords, mountains and the ocean right outside our door, we often take trips out. It doesn't always have to be long, demanding trips. We often have fun right outside the school, where we light a fire and cook outside. If we feel like it, we like to spend the night under the open sky.
When our lines travel abroad, we prefer buses and trains over planes. It is a conscious choice to reduce our carbon footprint. Modern buses are energy efficient with lower emissions and are therefore a more environmentally friendly option.
The journey itself takes longer, but we see more. We get to travel through varied landscapes and see more of the country. There will be stops and breaks to experience the culture.
Bus trips are very social and a great way to get to know each other even better.
Bus instead of plane
Gather and harvest
We grow our own vegetables in our greenhouse and kitchen garden. In season you can taste organic potatoes, strawberries, herbs and vegetables. We also have a seven-stone oven and like to make pizza with what we harvest.
Every autumn we have a food week , focusing on everything we can eat from nature. It's everything from berries, mushrooms, fish and sometimes deer. The self-pressed apple juice from fallow fruit is always popular!
Our kitchen
Our kitchen has Debio bronze approval , which means that at least 15% of the food we serve is organic.
Our chefs source local and seasonal ingredients wherever possible. Students are served four meals a day, with vegetarian and vegan options available every day. Every Monday is vegetarian day.
The school is also Fairtrade certified . This means that we support fair trade and better conditions for farmers and workers in Africa, Asia and Latin America. This is important for more sustainable agriculture and better life on earth.
Christmas at Fjordane
Throughout the year, we carry out various projects that are about giving something of ourselves to others, for a warmer and more inclusive society.
Christmas at Fjordane is an event where students and staff invite young and old in the local community to the school to give them (and ourselves) a pleasant pre-Christmas time.
The children can ride horses, we have face painting and fairy tale time, we have a Christmas market and sales of food and drinks that taste like Christmas.
Part of the surplus always goes to a charitable organization, such as Save the Children or Drop in the Sea. In recent years, we have donated the surplus to “Project Philippines”.
Through the project, we will work during the school year to improve the upbringing conditions of children and young people in the Philippines. In February, you will have the chance to experience firsthand how your efforts are making a difference and you will feel the joy of helping others.
— Getting so close to another culture, nature and everyday life left its mark. I am left with strong memories, and feel that we have all gained a closer bond and a more open mind. Simone | Student at Movement X Modern Circus
